Folding Together: Supporting Origami Ink in Their Journey to Rebuild
Over Twenty Years of Inspiration: The Story Behind Origami Ink
More than two decades ago, Jonathan and Cathie, the founders of Origami Ink, discovered a unique piece of framed art for their home. It featured a beautifully folded origami frog, symbolizing delicate craftsmanship and thoughtful design. This simple yet meaningful artwork would later inspire the name of their cherished retail store, Origami Ink—a beloved destination for pen enthusiasts in Asheville, North Carolina. To this day, the framed origami frog hangs in their home, a constant reminder of the creativity and inspiration that sparked their journey.
An Unexpected Turn: Hurricane Helene's Impact
However, in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, that journey took an unexpected turn. The storm left a trail of destruction, devastating homes, businesses, and communities—including Origami Ink’s Asheville store. The hurricane caused significant damage and displaced a hub where local pen enthusiasts had gathered for years to celebrate their shared passion for fine writing instruments, inks, and stationery.
A Community Comes Together
In the face of this disaster, something remarkable emerged: the strength and support of the pen community. Pen collectors, retailers, and enthusiasts have always been a tight-knit group, united by their love for fine writing and creativity. In times of need, this community shows up for one another—and Hurricane Helene was no exception.
Introducing the Origami Hopping Frogs products
Retro51 (R51), a brand known for its beautifully designed and thoughtfully crafted writing instruments, has connected with Origami Ink to support the natural disaster recovery efforts. In result, R51 introduced the Origami Ink - Hopping Frogs Tornado Rollerball Pen, a limited-time pre-sale launch that celebrates Origami Ink’s story while aiding in the rebuilding of their store.
This playful pen features an intricate design of origami-style "hopping frogs" printed across the barrel, finished with a glossy varnish and polished chrome accents. Packaged in a matching and well known graphic tube, this item will also include step-by-step instructions for folding your own origami frog—a nod to the art style that inspired the store’s name.
While this pen is not individually numbered, it is a one-time production run, making it a truly special and unique item. R51 will only produce as many pens as are ordered during the pre-sale period, ensuring that each pen serves as a meaningful reminder of the pen community’s unwavering support during this challenging time.
The support doesn’t end with the pen. In collaboration with Retro51, Rickshaw Bagworks has committed to creating a matching Rickshaw Pen Sleeve, designed to pair perfectly with the Origami Hopping Frogs pen. This protective sleeve allows fans of this design to safeguard their own pen while contributing to the recovery efforts.
How you can help

The Power of Community
The pen community—both near and far—has come together to offer support, proving once again that when we unite around shared passions, we can overcome even the toughest challenges. From special pen releases to fundraisers, the outpouring of love and encouragement shows the depth of connection this community fosters.
As Origami Ink begins the process of rebuilding, they are reminded that, like the intricate folds of an origami figure, their story is one of resilience, creativity, and heart. The Origami Hopping Frogs Tornado Pen represents more than just a writing instrument—it’s a symbol of the pen community’s strength and a tribute to the enduring spirit of Origami Ink.
Whether you’re an avid pen collector or someone who believes in the power of small businesses and creativity, this is your opportunity to support a meaningful cause while adding a unique piece to your collection.
