From Barrel to Pen: A Full-Circle Story of Craftsmanship and Sustainability
At Retro51, we’re excited to introduce our latest collection: the Tornado™ Woodworks. And the first to be featured in this collection is the rich Bourbon Barrel pens. These pens aren’t just another writing instrument—they represent a journey that blends craftsmanship, sustainability, and a love for the finer things in life. As someone who is eager to dive deeper into the world of bourbon and whiskey, I’ve come to appreciate the meticulous craftsmanship, refined taste, and elegance that define these spirits. It’s this appreciation that makes our new Bourbon Barrel pens even more special.
For bourbon enthusiasts, the story of these pens is a fascinating one. Bourbon barrels are crafted from American oak and go through an intense aging process to develop the rich, complex flavors that define your favorite spirits. Once these barrels have fulfilled their role in the bourbon world, they’re often retired if not reused for other barrel-aged spirits. But rather than letting this prized wood go to waste, we saw an opportunity to give it a second life.
Our Bourbon Barrel pens start with these used but reclaimed barrels made of oak wood, which are stripped down and transformed into elegant writing instruments. Each pen retains the unique character of the wood, telling the story of its previous life through every grain and hue. It’s a tangible connection to the world of bourbon, for both connoisseurs and those who appreciate fine craftsmanship.
But the story doesn’t end there. At Retro51, we believe that sustainability is key to creating a better world where we're able to keep writing. That’s why we were excited to share that with every purchase of our Bourbon Barrel pens, we contribute to our tree-planting initiative. For every pen sold, a new tree is planted, helping to reforest our planet and offset the environmental impact.
To recap, as we get ready for the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, we’re thrilled to share this special pen with you. If you missed out due to their overwhelming response, we assure you - they are worth the wait. You might still find some through our dealers. We’ve sprung into action and have started to work diligently to restock, but please bear with us as it may take some time. And as a reminder — you should definitely sign up for our Retro Rangers Newsletter so you can be informed of their return! Thank you for your patience and continued support in bringing you more of these unique writing instruments.
Let’s write the next chapter together—one that honors tradition and champions a greener future.
